In response to the recent news that St. Vincent’s may shut down, Governor David A. Paterson is convening a task force whose purpose is to provide a feasible means by which the hospital can be saved.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, along with Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance and Haitian Consul General Felix Augustin, announced that they will be holding a free fraud prevention and immigrants’ rights program for Haitians this Saturday.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer was recently interviewed by the “What’s on Your Plate?” project, a documentary about kids and food politics. In the documentary, Stinger talks about the growth of greenmarkets in Northern Manhattan, the Go Green East Harlem cookbook, and ways that the New York City food system can be improved.

Manhattan Borough Scott Stringer along with the United Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, the NAACP, and 16 other elected officials filed a lawsuit today against the Department of Education for planning to close 19 low-performing schools. The lawsuit claims that the Department of Education violated state law by not analyzing the impact of each school closure on the community.

At a monthly Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) board meeting held earlier today, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer hand-delivered more than 16,500 petitions from parents and straphangers outraged by the MTA’s decision to slash funding for the Student MetroCard program.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer testified at the Panel for Educational Policy’s vote on the closing of 19 city schools by the city Department of Education. Earlier today, he participated in a rally organized by the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) against these school closures.
Borough President Scott Stringer, held his Third Annual Haitian Independence Day Tribute. Taking place after the earthquake in Haiti, Borough President Stringer noted that the event has taken “on particular significance…as neighbors across the city reach out in support of the thousands of New Yorkers with family back home in Haiti.” The event, co-hosted by the Haitian Roundtable and Caribbean News, recognized and honored the efforts of Joel Dreyfuss, Dr. Lesly Kernisant (founder of SIMCAT), Geraldine Méhu, and Ninaj Raoul, four leading Haitian Americans New Yorkers.

The Manhattan Borough President held the first of two workshops for the New York City nonprofit community. The workshop was a collaboration between the Borough President’s Office and Baruch College’s Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management.
