Volunteers from throughout the country, including 5th and 6th graders from the St. Aloyisus Education Clinic of Harlem, college students from Florida Southern College, and members from the Black Women’s Leadership Caucus helped plant Heritage roses at the Harriet Tubman Memorial in Harlem today. The event, held by the Office of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and the Heritage Rose Foundation, celebrated the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and marked the Harriet Tubman Memorial’s inclusion in the Heritage Rose District of New York City.

Borough President Scott Stringer stood in solidarity with approximately 150 members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember Rosie Mendez, and the Anti-Violence Project in front of the LGBT Center for a rally in response to last week’s discovery that The Center’s rainbow flag had been burned in a display of hate.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer presented a “Day of Action” today in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month at the NY Academy of Medicine. Presenters included Byron Hurt, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, published writer, and anti-sexist activist, and Harriet Lessel, the Executive Director of the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault.
