Out with the old and in with the Green at Grand Central (NY Times) Grand Central Terminal has completed its green transition from incandescent lighting to compact fluorescent lighting. As of Tuesday, the Grand Central finished changing the 4,000 or so light bulbs in its public spaces. Because fluorescent lighting is both energy and cost efficient, it is estimated that nearly $200,000 a year will be saved because of this switch in bulbs.
Green Schools Alliance celebrating Earth Day in the city. Earlier last month, over 100 NYC schools, students, and community members in the Green School Alliance, attended the first Green School Conference held in the city. With a focus on incorporating sustainable practices into the school environment, the conference featured workshops giving students a better idea of what “being green” meant. Some of the topics covered included how to measure a school’s carbon footprint, how to use green technology in the classroom, and how school lunches can be more sustainable for the environment.
The Green School Alliance is a program of the non profit, Global Environmental Options for both primary and secondary students in public and private schools. Interested in learning more about the GSA? Explore their website and find out about their events for the summer.
