In the aftermath of New York’s unprecedented housing boom of the 2000s, over 600 construction sites still remain stalled throughout our City. More than just eyesores, these sites pose safety concerns and other threats in our neighborhoods. Recently, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer released a report entitled Arrested Development: Breathing New Life Into Stalled Construction Sites. This first-of-its-kind study surveyed all 129 stalled construction sites in Manhattan and found that 37% had problems with litter; 60% had fencing that was in disrepair or vandalized, and half of the sites had sidewalk obstructions. The report calls for a multifaceted campaign to address stalled construction sites through revitalizing the sites with imaginative temporary uses; reclaiming narrowed sidewalk conditions where possible; correcting blighting conditions like vandalism and easing regulations to allow construction to begin as soon as it is ready. |
