Statement by BP Stringer on the Passing of Former New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch

Mayor Edward I. Koch was a larger than life figure, a man who embodied the fighting spirit of New York and became a worldwide symbol of the City he loved. He helped rescue New York from a threatened bankruptcy, and led the City's economic and cultural rebirth with a bold, straight-talking style that endeared him to millions. He continued to be a beacon of common sense long after his Mayoral years ended, and this City will miss his wisdom, his trademark zingers and his unflagging engagement with public life. When he asked "How Am I Doing?" the question could have been asked of us—because Ed Koch so vividly reflected the City that is now diminished with his passing. My thoughts go out to his family and friends at this very sad time.

Our children can’t be expected to shoulder the burden of reductions to after-school programs, or the loss of 2,500 teachers because of a negotiating impasse."

Statement by BP Stringer on Today's Attempted Suicide on the R Train

Another attempted suicide cannot become a common-place occurrence in one of the largest transit systems in the world. This is a troubling and dangerous trend with serious implications for the millions of commuters who ride the subway each day. With six fatalities so far in 2013, New York is on pace to reach nearly 100 deaths this year. I renew my call for an investigation by the MTA inspector general to determine why accidents are on the rise and what can be done to make our subway system safer."

Statement by BP Stringer on City Council Passage of Legislation Banning Discrimination Against Unemployed Job Seekers

I applaud Speaker Quinn and the New York City Council for passing legislation today that would ban discrimination by employers against people who happen to be unemployed. This timely bill would ensure that New Yorkers who are out of work—usually through no fault of their own—do not face additional hurdles of bias and exclusion in their search for a new job. My office called attention to this issue in 2011, when we uncovered examples of online job postings that brazenly said unemployed people need not apply. With today's vote, the council has taken a big step toward protecting the rights of all job-seekers, and I urge Mayor Bloomberg to sign this measure into law.
